Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation Chief James Comey Enters Denial Plea to Allegations of Lying US Legislators
Former FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.
The former director's legal representative submitted the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was charged shortly after Trump pressured his top legal official to take action against him.
Legal Proceedings
At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they planned to submit various motions to dismiss the legal matter before a trial, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to handle the legal matter.
James Comey's proceedings was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
Judicial Environment
James Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he understood the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.
Background Context
Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was overseeing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.
While in office, Mr Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against the candidate were not pursued, causing disapproval from Republicans as well.
Current Allegations
The federal government assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to influence, block and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
In a video the former director shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"Our household have known for a long time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."
These allegations against Mr Comey emerged after Trump published on social media insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and others.
