Escaping Single-Parent Vacation Nightmare to House-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Transformation

Following my marriage concluded, I thought holidays being a single parent would be easy. Quickly discovered they proved either extremely expensive, or seemed exclusively suitable for “conventional” households, or were far too cheap that I came home more exhausted than when I started.

Early Vacation Attempts

My first attempt, camping with friends, went well until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Hours of struggling with it under the sun afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Subsequently, the adventure holiday for single-parent households. The abseiling and caving were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed ruined my back. We tried a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of traditional families felt intense, and poolside conversations with fellow ladies fizzled out since I wasn’t come with a convenient partner for their own husbands to talk to. A trip to Majorca with a friend and her kids was wonderful, but the expense was eye-watering.

Discovering Pet-Sitting

Later, last autumn, a friend asked if we could house-sit her dogs in Devon as she attended to a wedding. During a tranquil couple of days, we walked on the beach, and settled near the fireplace in the evening. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in the region, and it also went well. Encouraged, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, where, by caring for people’s pets, you reside at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I secured a 10-day pet-sit within the county, looking after a retriever called Buzz while his owners were abroad.

Our daily strolls gave us the opportunity to explore stunning natural settings.

This marked our first assignment for unknown individuals, but all anxiety dissipated the moment we reached the beautiful four-bedroom home and encountered the gentle Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Our daily canine strolls offered us the opportunity to explore magnificent nature spots, and, after we came back, we were able to relax outdoors for important discussions about our favourite “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were any pricey tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we browsed bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and embarked on kayak trips. I felt more carefree and more joyful than ever in years, and noticed my bond with my daughter Polly deepen every day. I don’t afraid to admit that I cried with happiness. Things felt achievable once more.

Is House-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting may not be for everyone. Certain individuals prefer zero duties during vacations apart from choosing their next cocktail, are not fond of dogs or cats, or find it strange regarding staying in a stranger’s bedroom, clearing their dishwasher, and taking out the trash. However the soothing rhythm of ordinary life, with work stripped out and new places to investigate, suits me perfectly.

It keeps me from descending into complete idleness, a state that leaves me experience twitchy and oddly hollow. And, financially, house-sitting acts as a lifeline for a single parent. A 10-day getaway in a comparable house in the same region we visited would set me approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.

An Alternative Perspective

As for staying in a stranger’s house, I found it enriching. Even though house-sitting represents a transaction, it is equally an expression of trust between unfamiliar people and creatures, that has brought out the finest version of me – my patient, loving and measured aspect, overflowing with appreciation for the people and locations we discover. I’ve already lined up another short break away, caring for a sighthound within verdant Surrey, and, in the coming year, I hope to try pet-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of creative thinking, we can see the world from the comfort of a home – it simply happens to be someone else’s.
